What is Self-Advocacy?

The Self-advocacy is the ability to speak up for yourself and the things that are important to you. For individuals with learning disabilities (LD), self-advocacy means that you can explain what you need and why with confidence

The Key to Self-Advocacy

  • Self-advocacy is the ability to communicate your needs effectively.
  • Those who practice self-advocacy are more likely to thrive in school, work, and life.
  • Self-advocacy skills can be learned at any age.

A Deaf Child:

  • They have the right to speak up for themselves
  • They have the right to learn and access information.
  • They have the right to find out who will support them.
  • They have the right to know their rights and responsibilities.
  • They have the right to learn or ask for help with problem-solving.
  • They have the right to assert themselves by reaching out to others when they need help.

A Hearing Family:

  • He/she needs to learn the American Sign Language to enable them communicating with their deaf child.
  •  He/she needs to ensure that a deaf child is satisfied with school facilities.
  • He/she needs to speak up to defend their deaf children against discrimination and oppression either in school or workplace, housing access for disabilities.
